Pack Essentials for Hospital Bag

Welcome to Travel+Experiment!

If you are planning for a hospital birth and once you are around 35 weeks pregnant, you can start packing for yourself, your partner and your baby the necessary items needed in the hospital so that you are ready to go as soon as your baby ready to arrive. You may ask your hospital what they provide for babies and mothers.
Here are the lists you’ll need for the essentials you need to pack before heading to the hospital.

For Labor Checklist
  • A picture ID (Driver’s license or State ID), health insurance card, hospital registration forms/paperwork
  • Birth plan (if you have one). A birth plan is a document that lets your medical team know your preferences for things like how to manage labor pain.
  • Eyeglasses
  • Slippers. You’ll need to wear into the bathroom.
  • Bathrobe, gown (white clothing), 3 pair’s socks. Hospitals provide gowns and socks for you to use during labor and afterward. Slippers and a robe may come in handy if you want to walk the halls during labor
  • Snacks and Candy. Keep everyone happy by bringing enough snacks for you and your partner to share. Lollipops are especially great for conquering dry mouth during labor.
  • Towel. For the drive to the hospital, put the garbage sack down on your seat and then the towel. That way, if your water breaks on the way to the hospital, you don't have to worry about cleaning the car when you get home.
  • 3 pairs of warm socks for walking the halls, before and after labor
  • Lip balm (hospitals are very dry)
  • Headband or ponytail holder
  • Heating Pad
  • Massage Lotion
  • Basic Toiletries

For your partner
  • Camera or Video Recorder
  • Cash and Change for vending machines and non-perishable snacks
  • Cell Phone and Charger
  • Snacks and Candy
  • Basic Toiletries
  • Changes of clothes including sleep wear

After you deliver
  • Sleepwear, robe and maternity underwear
  • Soft pillow
  • Nursing Supplies. Bring breast pads to absorb leaks, nursing tank tops and maternity bras (buy them at the end of your pregnancy—most women are about that same size postpartum), a breast pump (most hospitals provide one but you may want to start out using your own), cooling gel pads, and a nursing pillow
  • Basic Toiletries. Deodorant, body wash, shampoo, hairbrush, face wash, lip balm, sanitary pads, toothbrush, tooth paste and moisturizer are necessities.
  • A going home clothes and shoes for you
  • Cell Phone and Charger
  • Maternity underpants. Some women love the mesh underwear usually provided by the hospital, but others don't. You can't go wrong with your own roomy cotton underpants. The hospital will provide sanitary pads because you'll bleed after delivery. Make sure you have a supply of heavy-duty pads waiting at home!
  • Snacks. After many hours of labor, you're likely to be pretty hungry, and you may not want to rely solely on hospital food. So bring your own – crackers, fresh or dried fruit, nuts, granola bars, or whatever you think you'll enjoy.
  • Extra clothes. Bring a few changes of clothes since you stay a few days after the baby is born. You can always stay fresh everyday with people always coming to visit.
  • Slippers. You’ll need to wear into the bathroom and shower
  • A warm robe or sweater
  • Pen and paper
  • Headband or ponytail holder
  • Bath Towel

For your baby
  • A going home outfit for Baby. You can't drive your baby home without one! Have a rear-facing car seat properly installed ahead of time and know how to buckle your baby in correctly
  • A warm blanket. The hospital will provide blankets for swaddling your baby while you're there, but you may want to bring your own to tuck around your baby in the car seat for the ride home. Make it a heavy one if the weather's cold.
  • Pair of socks or booties
  • Extra cap
  • Baby nail clippers or emery board
  • An installed infant car seat. You can't drive your baby home without one! Have a rear-facing car seat properly installed ahead of time and know how to buckle your baby in correctly.
God Bless!

Don't just keep this to yourself. SHARE!
